Mabel Lou Weber, a GFWC legend

Mabel Lou Weber has only been my friend for nine years.  But in that time, she has recognized me as a potential leader and encouraged me to do things I would never have dreamt of doing.  I think the thing I admire about her the most is her ability to recognize promise in others and her enthusiasm to bring out the best in them.  She is generous and giving with her time and all her talents.  She loves life and is positive and cheerful, even in the face of difficulties.  In fact her old friends have given her the nickname, “Gus” for Gusto!  She loves her family and friends, and we know it.

Mabel literally would not take “no” for an answer when our golf league was looking for a new Vice President.  She felt I would be good for the job, and she made it impossible for me to decline.  From there it was only a small step to becoming president the next term and then taking office in our Woman’s Club too.

Mabel is a beautiful 81 year old woman who is currently the Public Affairs Chairman for GFWC Illinois, and our State Musician.  This is the perfect job for her as she is a veteran of eighteen years as a member of her town board.  She just finished her two year term as the International Musician of GFWC.  She actually began playing the organ at her church when she was 14 and still plays there today!

mabel2She is the most photogenic woman I know, but her beauty is so much more than skin deep.  Ladies, let me give you this word of advice:  if you are lucky enough to be Homecoming Queen when you are 18, keep your inner beauty by being generous all your life, and someday, when you are 81, someone will probably say you, too, are the most beautiful woman she knows.

Mabel Lou knows no stranger, when I first met her, she made me feel welcome and I consider her to be my friend. We need more people like her as mentors.

Mabel Lou is everything Karen wrote about and more. My being new to GFWC (3 years) encouraged to participate in all functions from local club to International. She is always encourging, giving positive feedback and has an open mind, instead 81 she has the heart and spirit of an 18yr old. It is a honor to know her.

Mabel Lou has been my friend for many years, she worked very hard for the 10th District as President, now she is on the state board and loves to play her piano. She never turns me down when I ask for help as now I am the 10th District president once more and she has the latest answers. Thanks Mabel Lou

I first met Mabel Lou over 11 years ago when I joined a golf league where she has been very actively playing. Her friendly ways of relating to everyone, her strong dedica tion where the first things that attracted me to her. Lately when I joined AWC I was able to admire her commitment to the GFWC, to her church and to her friends. I hope she counts me as one of hers. Job well done Mabel Lou and thanks Karen for making her a Homecoming Queen.

Mabel Lou is a true gem. I have known her for three years and in that time she has been inspiring in her dedication and willingness to help the “new kid on the block”.

One other thing to add-she is a great bridge player. So much fun over the cards-the joy she brings is contagious.

Karen, What a wonderful tribute to me. I am deeply honored. My life has been and will continue to be active in service to others and I thank God that he has given me many opportunities. My love for GFWC is very great as this is one of the greatest organizations that is directed to benefit fellow human beings in service and love. Karen, again many thanks for your kind words.

My husband and I have had the privilege of vacationing with Mable Lou several times during the almost 20 years that we have known her. She is nothing but fun to be with. Always in a great mood and the life of the party. I will never forget the time when we were in Deadwood, N.D. together. On the last evening of our trip we were awakened by her emotional outburst outside of our room. We thought that perhaps something bad had happened to her good friend Walter who was also traveling with us. As it turned out she had won the Royal Flush Jackpot on the poker machine in the hotel Casino. She sure knows how to have a good time and anyone who is with her can’t help but have a good time just because she is there.

We love you Mable Lou and have a happy birthday!

I would need many pages to tell of my feelings for Mabel Lou and all she has meant to me. It’s hard to ever say “no” to her because she is always on the go and in everything and doing for others. I became Pres. of AWC from 2004-2006 because of her encouragement. I had felt inadequate, but with Mabel Lou being there with her nod and smiles, it made it easier to move on and make a difference within the Club. We have golfed together, played bridge with one another and yes, laughed and cried together. She has helped me over a difficult 2008 year with many losses just knowing she was but a phone call away. She has been my mentor for many years, and about all else a true friend.

Happy 81st birthday my dear friend and a healthty and blessed 2009!!

What can I say about Mabel Lou! I have known her all my life and her great Mother of whom she was a Mother Advisor in Rainbow Girls. Mabel has always given me a lot of confidence in most of the things that I have asked her for. And what a great bridge player!!! Heard that she bid 7 No Trump and MADE IT!!!!! But then that’s Mabel; she does her very best in all that she takes on. God Bless.
