Marge Simmons heads up our initiative with the Boys & Girls Club

Have you ever been in the situation where someone asks you to do something, but you’re not real sure what you’re getting into? My first year as a clubwoman has been that way! Lucky for me they haven’t steered me wrong! This week I had another one of those “opportunities.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Westminster (Maryland) provides an after school program for about 30 elementary and middle school students who would otherwise be on-their-own for hours. In some neighborhoods in the city, this would be OK; unfortunately, that’s not the case for these kids. The president of their advisory board, Beth Tevis, met with us last year and I could immediately sense her passion for this organization. It turns out they are pretty desperate for money and volunteers and our club has decided to help out. A group of us met yesterday and agreed to help with a Valentine’s party and a couple of brave souls volunteered to do some after school tutoring or a program. Beth was delighted when Marge Simmons stepped up as the club’s point person and will enlist the help of more clubwomen.

I’m not comfortable working with “at-risk” kids – some of whom are bigger than me. But, maybe I can find something else to do – like fund raising. Knowing this group of women, I’m sure they’ll find something!! Stay tuned for more!
