LEADS Class of 2009!

leads1Never before have I spent four days with 600 women and had so much fun! (I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much time with that many women — in my life!) AND, never before have I met so many extraordinary women who give so much of themselves to their communities, the country and the world. My first convention was so memorable — LEADS introduced me to women, like me, who hope to assume a bigger leadership role at some point; Patty Whitehouse’s presentation on Conflict Resolution gave me insights into what influences people of different generations; Chris Sienkelewski helped me see that my personality traits group me as a  ”Director” and “Perfectionist” (oh, boy – my husband thought that explained a lot!); Marian St. Clair gave us guidance on how to put together a good presentation; and Nikki Willoughby gave us communication and PR tips.

There were so many good ideas I can’t list them all right now, but here are a few memorable moments for me…

1. Marlene, the convention manager, repremended us for “un-lady-like” behavior in the dinner line! She reminded us that everything we do and say is a reflection on this organization.

2. The women in Wisconsin have done marvelous work for pediatric emergency treatment.

3. When I hear about Girls Town in Missouri I want to cry because of the way these children have been treated. But, I am thankful that Girls Town and GFWC is there to help.

4. We need to develop a lot of mentoring programs.

5. I have to buy Victoria Rowell’s book — there is so much substance to this successful actress, dancer and author.

6. Start a list of “inspirations” .

When we said good bye several of the LEADS 2009 class pledged to keep in touch. I’m sure we will — it’s like we were all ready good friends from the past.

In future posts I’ll give more details, but all of this is just rattling around in my brain right now and I need time to digest it all.

A training day with the LEAD class and attendance at your first GFWC International Annual Convention is a mighty tremendous experience! You will be influencing many Club women in your State Federation with your smiles and enthusiasm! (Because I had the same experience, I know it is extra special!)

Thanks for sharing some of your memorable times with us.

Keep your LEADS federation friendships close to you in your GFWC journey!

Congrats!

I knew you would gain much from attendance at the convention (and contribute much). Looking forward to hearing more.

Sharon – so pleased to have met you and shared our experiences with each other and made so many new friends too! Don’t forget our wave and especially our sign language skills that we developed! Hope to see you at the Southeastern Convention this fall. I will be speaking of our LEADS experience at our Summer Conference in August in Charleston, West Virginia.
